Observation,Group A,Group B
1,1,4
2,2,5
3,3,6
4,4,7
5,20,8For Group A, the five sorted observations have median 3, Q1 2 and Q3 4 under interpolation. The IQR is 2, so the upper 1.5-IQR fence is 7 and 20 is shown as a potential outlier.
When to choose this chart
Box plots summarize and compare numeric distributions with medians, quartiles, whiskers and potential outliers. They reveal spread without showing every observation as an equally prominent mark.
Prepare and map your fields
Provide numeric observation columns for the groups you want to compare. This tool uses interpolated quartiles and 1.5-IQR whiskers; other software can use different quartile conventions.
Select each group's observation column and review omitted values.
Compare medians, box widths and whiskers before focusing on isolated points.
State the quartile and whisker convention if your report needs reproducible comparisons with another system.
Read the result correctly
A point outside the whiskers is a flag for review, not automatic evidence of a measurement error. The box contains the middle half of observations under the stated convention.
A mistake to avoid
A box plot hides multimodal structure and exact sample values. Inspect the source or a histogram before assuming two groups with similar boxes have the same distribution.
Export and keep your data private
Review the title, units, labels and any omitted-row warnings at the final export size. PNG is a raster image, SVG retains vector chart elements, and PDF embeds a raster image. Save the original table if you may need to revise the mapping.
Data stays in browser memory; no upload, external chart service or AI model. CSV, TSV, semicolon/pipe text, JSON and JSON Lines: 2 MB, 10,000 rows, 24 columns. Charts allow up to eight series; categorical charts 60 groups, lines/scatter/candlesticks 500 rows, pie/donut/waffle 12 categories, radar 3–12 dimensions. Blank/invalid mapped values are omitted and counted. Numeric values use a decimal point; remove currency symbols and grouping separators. Percent strings are treated as displayed numeric values (25% becomes 25). Dates use ISO format. Recommendations check data structure, not meaning or causation. PNG up to 16 MP; SVG stays vector; PDF embeds a high-resolution chart image. Review mappings, ordering, aggregation and labels before sharing.
