A small dataset to try

Region,Cost,Revenue,Customers
North,12,30,100
South,18,42,400
West,15,36,225

South's 400 customers are four times North's 100, so the area is four times larger and the radius roughly twice as large. The X and Y coordinates still encode cost and revenue independently.

When to choose this chart

A bubble chart adds a third numeric measure to a scatter plot. Position shows two variables and bubble area shows a nonnegative size measure.

Prepare and map your fields

Map numeric X and Y fields plus a nonnegative size field. Labels identify observations. Bubble area, not radius, represents magnitude, so a value four times larger has approximately twice the radius.

Confirm that the size column is meaningful as a magnitude and contains no negative values.

Inspect overlapping bubbles and choose labels that remain readable.

Explain all three units, including the bubble-size meaning, before sharing the chart.

Read the result correctly

Compare position first, then area. A prominent bubble can draw attention even when its X or Y measurement is unremarkable.

A mistake to avoid

Do not interpret diameter as the size value or use a signed profit column for nonnegative bubble sizes. Heavy overlap can obscure smaller observations.

Export and keep your data private

Review the title, units, labels and any omitted-row warnings at the final export size. PNG is a raster image, SVG retains vector chart elements, and PDF embeds a raster image. Save the original table if you may need to revise the mapping.

Data stays in browser memory; no upload, external chart service or AI model. CSV, TSV, semicolon/pipe text, JSON and JSON Lines: 2 MB, 10,000 rows, 24 columns. Charts allow up to eight series; categorical charts 60 groups, lines/scatter/candlesticks 500 rows, pie/donut/waffle 12 categories, radar 3–12 dimensions. Blank/invalid mapped values are omitted and counted. Numeric values use a decimal point; remove currency symbols and grouping separators. Percent strings are treated as displayed numeric values (25% becomes 25). Dates use ISO format. Recommendations check data structure, not meaning or causation. PNG up to 16 MP; SVG stays vector; PDF embeds a high-resolution chart image. Review mappings, ordering, aggregation and labels before sharing.
