Trace a photo onto paper with your phone camera

By Team Edtoolkits · Creative & print

Turn a photo into clean line art, place it over your live camera view and draw it on real paper.

Use the guide alongside the working tool.

Choose a photo that traces well

Clear subjects with a plain background give the cleanest lines. Outline keeps the main edges, Pencil keeps soft shading for sketch practice, and Bold makes thick lines that stay visible on a small screen.

If the sketch is noisy, lower Detail or raise Smooth. If important lines are missing, raise Detail.

Set up the camera

Rest the phone on a glass, a stack of books or a stand so the rear camera looks straight down at the paper. Keep the phone still while you draw.

Drag with one finger to move the sketch, pinch to resize and twist to rotate. Use the opacity slider so both the paper and the lines are visible, then tap Lock so your hand cannot move the sketch.

Draw and check

Watch the screen while your pencil follows the lines. Lower the opacity now and then to compare your drawing with the guide.

No camera? Use Lightbox: turn the brightness up, lay thin paper over the screen and trace directly. Download the PNG if you prefer a printed outline.
