A small dataset to try

Membership,People
Monthly,240
Annual,160
Trial,100

There are 500 people in the supplied categories: Monthly is 48%, Annual 32% and Trial 20%. The centre total provides scale that a percentage-only ring would omit.

When to choose this chart

A donut chart communicates part-to-whole shares while reserving its centre for a total. It works best for a few categories whose sum has a meaningful interpretation.

Prepare and map your fields

Provide nonnegative category values with a positive combined total. Map one value series and keep total rows out of the category list. Use the same units for every category.

Check the denominator and inspect omitted values before choosing a visual theme.

Keep category colours distinct and make legend labels readable.

Review the central total as well as the percentages; neither should imply data that was not imported.

Read the result correctly

The ring represents shares of the total, not a progress gauge with an independent target. A large central number does not change the meaning of the segment proportions.

A mistake to avoid

Very small slices and many similar categories are difficult to compare around a ring. Use a waffle for a deliberately approximate percentage story or bars for precise category comparisons.

Export and keep your data private

Review the title, units, labels and any omitted-row warnings at the final export size. PNG is a raster image, SVG retains vector chart elements, and PDF embeds a raster image. Save the original table if you may need to revise the mapping.

Data stays in browser memory; no upload, external chart service or AI model. CSV, TSV, semicolon/pipe text, JSON and JSON Lines: 2 MB, 10,000 rows, 24 columns. Charts allow up to eight series; categorical charts 60 groups, lines/scatter/candlesticks 500 rows, pie/donut/waffle 12 categories, radar 3–12 dimensions. Blank/invalid mapped values are omitted and counted. Numeric values use a decimal point; remove currency symbols and grouping separators. Percent strings are treated as displayed numeric values (25% becomes 25). Dates use ISO format. Recommendations check data structure, not meaning or causation. PNG up to 16 MP; SVG stays vector; PDF embeds a high-resolution chart image. Review mappings, ordering, aggregation and labels before sharing.
