Unsure,1Each category has one third of the total, or about 33.33%. A 100-cell grid cannot allocate a third of a cell, so the visible allocation must be 34, 33 and 33 cells, with the extra cell resolved by the rounding rule.
When to choose this chart
A waffle chart turns category shares into a 100-cell grid. It is useful for a simple approximate percentage story where a small rounding difference is acceptable.
Prepare and map your fields
Use nonnegative values with a positive total and up to 12 categories. The tool allocates whole cells by largest-remainder rounding, so each cell represents approximately one percentage point.
Map categories and one value series, excluding any separate total row.
Compare the allocated cells with the original proportions.
Label the chart as an approximate percentage display when exact fractional shares matter.
Read the result correctly
Count cells for an approximate share, not for the original number of people or records. A 100-cell grid can represent a dataset much larger or smaller than 100 observations.
A mistake to avoid
Rounding can make categories with equal or very similar shares look slightly different. Use a donut, pie or table when fractional percentages are important to the message.
Export and keep your data private
Review the title, units, labels and any omitted-row warnings at the final export size. PNG is a raster image, SVG retains vector chart elements, and PDF embeds a raster image. Save the original table if you may need to revise the mapping.
Data stays in browser memory; no upload, external chart service or AI model. CSV, TSV, semicolon/pipe text, JSON and JSON Lines: 2 MB, 10,000 rows, 24 columns. Charts allow up to eight series; categorical charts 60 groups, lines/scatter/candlesticks 500 rows, pie/donut/waffle 12 categories, radar 3–12 dimensions. Blank/invalid mapped values are omitted and counted. Numeric values use a decimal point; remove currency symbols and grouping separators. Percent strings are treated as displayed numeric values (25% becomes 25). Dates use ISO format. Recommendations check data structure, not meaning or causation. PNG up to 16 MP; SVG stays vector; PDF embeds a high-resolution chart image. Review mappings, ordering, aggregation and labels before sharing.
