Work out the tax-free part of your house rent allowance under the old regime: the least of HRA received, rent minus 10% of basic, and 50% or 40% of basic.
Use the guide alongside the working tool.
Open HRA Exemption Calculator →Pick the exam and document
Enter your monthly basic + DA, the HRA your employer pays and the rent you pay.
Frame and clean up
Choose the tax year and the city where you rent: metro cities allow 50% of basic, others 40%. FY 2026-27 counts Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune and Ahmedabad as metros too. Set how many months you paid rent.
Create and check
See the three limits with the lowest highlighted, the exempt and taxable HRA, and a hint if a slightly higher rent would make more of your HRA exempt. Copy the calculation for your records.
Privacy and limits
HRA exemption is available only in the old tax regime and only when you actually pay rent for a home you live in. The 8-city metro list for FY 2026-27 is as reported for the Income-tax Rules 2026; confirm with your employer or the notified rules. Rent receipts and your landlord's PAN (for rent above ₹1 lakh a year) are needed as proof. Not tax advice.
