Roman Numeral Converter in your browser

By Team Edtoolkits · Calculators

Convert numbers to Roman numerals and back with a step-by-step breakdown and a check for non-standard forms, overlines for big numbers, and dates in Roman numerals for tattoos and designs.

Use the guide alongside the working tool.

Open Roman Numeral Converter →

Pick the exam and document

Type a number (such as 2026) or a Roman numeral (such as MMXXVI): the tool works out which way to convert.

Frame and clean up

For numbers above 3,999, turn on overlines; for a date, switch to Date to Roman and pick the order and separator.

Create and check

Read the result with each step explained, see a warning if a numeral is not in standard form (such as IIII), and copy it.

Privacy and limits

Standard Roman numerals cover 1 to 3,999; overlines (a bar multiplies by 1,000) extend this to 3,999,999 but are not supported by every font. There is no Roman numeral for zero or negative numbers.
