How it works

When the government announces a DA or DR hike after the date it applies from, the difference for the gap months is paid later as arrears. This works out that difference month by month.

Arrears may be taxable
DA arrears are added to income in the year you receive them. You can claim relief under section 89 (old Act) if it pushes you into a higher slab.

Each month: basic × new rate − basic × old rate, with each amount rounded to the nearest rupee.
First month: Jul 2025 = ₹32,538 − ₹30,855 = ₹1,683.
Add 4 months = ₹6,732.

Use the basic you were actually paid in each month; add an increment above if it changed.
For pensioners, enter basic pension; the same maths gives dearness relief arrears.
Arrears for July–December usually come with the January-onward salary or a month after the order.

Arrears for each month from the effective month up to the month before the new rate is first paid = DA at the new rate minus DA at the old rate, on that month's basic. Monthly DA is rounded to the nearest rupee (fractions of 50 paise and above count as a rupee), as in the Department of Expenditure's DA orders. The rates and effective dates (1 January / 1 July) come from the Department of Expenditure office memorandum for each revision; enter the rate from that order.
