How it works

A fraction shows part of a whole: the top number (numerator) counts the parts and the bottom number (denominator) says how many equal parts make a whole. Mixed numbers like 1 1/2 are a whole number plus a fraction.

Turn mixed numbers into improper fractions: 1 1/2 = 3/2.
Find a common denominator: the LCM of 2 and 3 is 6.
Rewrite: 3/2 = 9/6 (multiply top and bottom by 3) and 2/3 = 4/6 (multiply top and bottom by 2).
Add the numerators: 9 + 4 = 13, so the answer is 13/6.
13/6 cannot be simplified: the numerator and denominator share no common factor.
As a mixed number: 13 ÷ 6 = 2 remainder 1, so 2 1/6.

To add or subtract, the denominators must match, so find the LCM of the denominators first.
To divide, flip the second fraction and multiply.
Type a whole number as 5, or a decimal as 0.25.

Exact integer arithmetic. Addition and subtraction use the least common multiple of the denominators; division multiplies by the reciprocal; results are reduced by the highest common factor (Euclid's algorithm).
