How it works

Net Promoter Score asks how likely someone is to recommend you, from 0 to 10. Scores of 9–10 are promoters, 7–8 passives and 0–6 detractors. NPS is the percentage of promoters minus the percentage of detractors, so it runs from −100 to +100. Because it comes from a sample, it has a margin of error; the confidence interval shows the range the true score probably sits in.

Promoters 54.5% − detractors 18.2% = NPS +36.4.
Standard error = √(p + d − (p − d)²) ÷ √n = 5.20 points, so the 95% interval is +26.2 to +46.6.
Change = +36.4 − (+13.6) = +22.7; its 95% interval is +7.9 to +37.5, which excludes 0.

Compare against your own past scores and your industry, not a universal target.
If the interval of the change includes 0, the movement may just be noise.
Passives count in the total but not in the score.
Ask the same question the same way each time so trends are fair.

NPS = %promoters − %detractors (Reichheld, 2003). Standard error of NPS = √((p + d − (p − d)²) ÷ n), the multinomial variance of the promoter-minus-detractor difference. Interval = NPS ± z × SE with z = 1.645, 1.960 or 2.576. The change interval combines the two periods' standard errors in quadrature.
